holy grail ebook

For some people, losing fat isn’t that hard… but gaining muscle is next to impossible. For others, they pack on muscle effortlessly… but they’ll gain fat just from looking at junk food.

So no matter what, if you want to do something crazy like gain muscle and lose fat at the same time, it’s going to be impossible… Or is it?

Not if you ask Tom Venuto, author of The Holy Grail Body Transformation Program.

This is a book dedicated to explaining just how to accomplish the holy grail of body transformation – gaining muscle and losing fat at the same time.

If you know anything about bodybuilding (we’ve all been curious, right?), you’re probably familiar with the concepts of bulking and cutting. These are two distinct phases of training – one where you focus on gaining lots of weight (mainly muscle), the other where you focus on losing weight (mainly fat.)

It’s a tried and true method, but you’re bound to gain fat while gaining muscle, and it’s very difficult to preserve all your muscle gains while losing only fat. So while bulking up, you’ll get fat, and while cutting, you’ll be starving and low on energy. This makes bulking and cutting a terrible approach for any endurance athlete who must be both slim (for an ideal power-to-weight ratio) and energized (to perform) at all times.

So I decided to read the book and give this program a shot. I don’t know Tom Venuto personally, but from what I’ve seen, he’s one of the more legit, trustworthy sources of information in the bodybuilding world. His older book, seen at www.burnthefat.com, was wildly popular, and I don’t recall anyone even claiming that it was overhyped or a scam.

I enjoyed this article by him, about burning fat faster than 2 pounds per week, and you don’t have to pay anything to read it.

And just look at this picture of him. He has obviously produced serious results in the past!

What’s In The Book?

Since “body recomposition” is mainly about nutrition, it’s no surprise that this book centers on nutrition. Training is crucial, but food is the key factor.

All the good stuff – carb cycling, nutrient timing, etc. – is covered. It’s not simple by any means, but it works. If you own Precision Nutrition, you probably have nutrient timing down. Combining that with carbohydrate and calorie cycling, though, takes some extra effort.

These aren’t new concepts, but Tom isn’t promising any miracles. What he’s doing is taking a complex topic and simplifying it so you can understand it, without dumbing it down and changing the important details.

So you’re going to read a lot of theory first, then you’re going to read the actual strategies. There are multiple strategies to choose from, depending on how interested you are in gaining muscle vs losing fat. This is the must-read section! (The only strategy not mentioned is Intermittent Fasting and how it could be used in the context of the Holy Grail, but that might require a whole other book!)

After explaining the nutrition strategies (the best part of the book,) Tom covers the principles of a good training program to follow. He does give you a sample training plan to follow (called The New Bodybuilding,) but I’m not a huge fan of it. I find it far more important that he explains why certain types of training plans work.

I really like using the Visual Impact Muscle Building protocol, and from my understanding, it’s perfectly in line with the principles in The Holy Grail.

(Of course, if you don’t feel like buying a separate program or designing your own, this free bonus workout is perfectly usable.)

Tom also throws in some sample meal plans, great if you want to see an example of how you should be eating on any given day.

My Goals and My Results

So, why did I decide to use this program? Well, I like to learn, and I figured I could learn something useful from the bodybuilding world that could be applied to endurance sports!

Plus, a little body transformation of my own wouldn’t hurt! I wasn’t looking for a Christian Bale transformation here, just a little extra muscle and less fat.

With my body type, if I’m not lifting like crazy, I can’t maintain any upper body muscle mass at a body weight over ~165lb. At the same time, if I’m around 152lb, I still have trouble getting super defined abs. This program allowed me to work on that without compromising my sports performance.

Also, I had just finished using a variation of the Get Shredded Diet to lose fat, and I was sick of starving myself!

The Holy Grail system was awesome! I used it over the course of six weeks and enjoyed every minute of it! Specifically, I was using the 3:3 zig-zag approach for an equal focus on muscle gain and fat loss. The workouts were manageable and the diet was easy – the hardest part of the diet was actually the high calorie days!

However, my results were nothing to write home about. I seem to have lost a little bit more fat, and if I gained any muscle, it was barely measurable. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy with the results and found them interesting, but I don’t have mesmerizing numbers or photos!

Specifically, I only noticed a significant change in one girth measurement. My weight stayed right around 154 lb, but my waist went from 30.1″ to 29.5″. I was shocked! I mean, I thought I was eating for muscle building!

So on the surface, not a whole lot changed. But I continue to learn about my body (a never-ending process), and I’ll probably keep using these strategies when I want to gain some muscle mass.

Of course, as soon as I got distracted and went back to eating normally, my waist measurement started creeping back up and I felt like I lost a bit of muscle definition. So you can’t just test this program for 4-6 weeks and expect lifetime results.

That said, these strategies are ones I’ll be using over and over again in the future!

My final verdict is…

This program is theoretically sound, fun to use, and will provide results if you do it right. Just make sure you can commit to this eating plan for 6-12 months minimum. (Patience is required.)

If you’re already in good shape and want to step things up a notch, and you’re willing to put in the effort, this is a great way to get a better looking body without risking your sports performance!
