zone perfect bar

It was late at night, and I was scanning the shelf at Wal-Mart looking for some sort of cheap nutrition bar for a road trip snack. What I found was the ZonePerfect Nutrition Bar, which looked like a decent choice that wouldn’t taste like crap.

I got a box of six bars for just under $5, which isn’t too shabby. I think they were the cheapest ones there.

I’m not sure what the premise is, like if these bars are affiliated with the Zone diet or what, but I’ll test them out like any other bar…

Health and Nutrition

Starting with the ingredients…

Ingredients: Soy Protein Nuggets (Isolated Soy Protein, Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour, Malt, Salt), Yogurt Coating [Sugar, Palm Kernel Oil, Nonfat Dry Milk Solids, Yogurt Powder (Cultured Whey Protein Concentrate, Cultured Skim Milk, Yogurt Culture), Soy Lecithin, Salt, Natural Flavor], Corn Syrup, Milk Protein Isolate, Fructose, Almonds, Palm Oil, Glycerine, Water. Less Than 2% Of The Following: Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Salt, Xanthan Gum, Soy Lecithin.

Vitamins And Minerals: Calcium Phosphate, Ascorbic Acid, d-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Magnesium Oxide, Niacinamide, Zinc Oxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Ferrous Fumarate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin A Palmitate, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Chromium Chloride, Biotin, Sodium Selenite, Sodium Molybdate, Cyanocobalamin.

Well, the ingredients aren’t good at all. The bar is mainly processed junk! The only decent ingredients would be the few little pieces of almonds and the milk protein isolate.

Nutrition Facts:

Calories 210
Total Fat 7g
Saturated Fat 4g
Sodium 220mg
Potassium 55mg
Total Carbs 22g
Sugars 15g
Protein 15g

The bar offers a decent amount of fat and protein to balance out the 15g sugar. While the ingredients aren’t great, they are somwhat balanced, and I preferred the 22g carbs here to the 44g carb bars in this situation.

I certainly didn’t buy this bar because it looked healthy and natural. However, it was a lesser evil compared to the other energy bars on Wal-mart’s shelf at the last minute. I just needed this for a quick breakfast snack, so the somewhat balanced nutrient profile was all I really needed.

Taste Test

I picked out the Cinnamon Roll flavor.

The crisp rice and protein nuggets make it similar to the Clif Luna bar’s texture. It’s pretty soft/moist, but it has crunch to it as well. It’s sort of like a rice krispy treat with cinnamon in it.

The flavor is pretty good, comparable to other cinnamon roll flavors. It’s not as fun as eating a real cinnamon roll, and not quite as tasty as a cinnamon roll Larabar, but tasty enough for a nutrition bar. The yogurt coating makes it sweet, like white chocolate.

Overall it’s a decent tasting bar, but nothing special.

My final verdict is…

I only bought these because I needed a last-minute road trip snack that wasn’t pure sugar. These fit the bill for that, plus they were the cheapest option at the time. So I’m not disappointed with these, but I have no plans to buy them again nor recommend them for anything.
