steve's original paleo kit

When it comes to pre-packaged snacks, I usually stick with two things – either energy bars for on-bike use, or nuts, dried fruit, and beef jerky for long drives, hikes, etc.

Lo and behold this thing called Steve’s Original Paleo Kit, which is basically a package of beef jerky, dried fruits, and nuts! It’s not trail mix though. And it’s not an energy bar either.

Here’s how Steve’s describes it:

“A delicious mix of jerky, raw macadamias, almonds, pecans and dried fruits, PaleoKits are perfect for people on the go. Vacuum packed for maximum freshness, PaleoKits have a six-month shelf life and are great on-the-go fuel for life’s journey.”

That’s a good description, but still, it doesn’t describe what the Paleo Kit is actually like. I think it is better described as a funky looking slab of meat, nuts, and berries all sticking together.

Depending on how you look at it in the package, it might even appear to be a pile of animal innards! I hate to say it, but at the right angle, it looks way too weird to be eating. Of course, I ate it anyway!

And here’s my review…

Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Ingredients: Beef Jerky (Beef, Sea Salt, Apple Juice Concentrate, Paprika, Pineapple Juice Concentrate, Beet powder, Black pepper, Garlic powder, Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)), Infused Cranberries (Cranberries, Apple Juice Concentrate, Sunflower Oil), Infused Strawberries (Strawberries, Apple Juice Concentrate, Sunflower Oil, Citric Acid), Almonds, Macadamia Nuts, Pecans.

For a pre-packaged snack, that is a very natural ingredients list.

Nutrition Facts

Calories 360
Fat 12g
Sodium 927mg
Carbs 36g
Sugar 25g
Protein 28g

I really like this macronutrient mix for a snack, whether this is a snack at work or an energy source while out hiking. You get plenty of calories and a nice mix of carbs, protein, and fat. Sodium is rather high, but that’s beef jerky for you!

Steve’s Original Paleo Kit Taste Test and Eating Experience

This is where things get interesting! For this test, I sat at the kitchen table… which was a good idea!

When I actually opened the package, I realized that this thing is very sticky and messy! (Just see the sticky coating on the inside of the package, pictured at right.)

If you look at my other picture (later in the review), that’s how it came out of the package. You can see mine is in four main pieces, with some loose fruit and nuts sitting around. You need a plate for this!

Then you also have to tear into it with your teeth where the jerky is piled up. It’s tough to get a good bite when you have to rip the jerky. You either get a small bite or a huge one.

paleo kit messy sticky

Unfortunately, if I’m out for a run or even a leisurely hike, I’m not going to be carrying a plate with me. And I won’t want huge bites of food. And I would hate to drop a piece of the Paleo Kit on the ground and waste it!

Because of that, I’d have to say the Paleo Kit lacks the convenience of typical energy bars.

Unless you’re sitting at a kitchen table, it’s inconvenient. You’re either going to drop it on the ground, smear sticky stuff all over your face, or need to wash your hands very well. For my test, I could clearly see how messy it would be, so I chose to eat it on a plate and then wash my hands.

The taste, though, is really good!

The beef jerky base is about as tasty as the average beef jerky out there. Nothing special. But the bites where you get a mix of jerky, nuts, and fruit at once – so delicious!!

I had this one bite where I got nice soft jerky, a pecan, and a strawberry. Amazing! The jerky was so soft, combined with the sweet fruit flavor and crunch from the nut – wow! If each bite was like that, it would be heaven!

As far as satiety and satisfaction, I’d say the Paleo Kit was more satisfying than most energy bars, but not to a great extent. For being 360 calories and pretty high in fat and protein, it didn’t fill me up as much as expected. However, had I been out hiking, that could be a different story!

My final verdict is…

It’s kind of hard for me to issue a final verdict, because I have mixed feelings on this thing. First, it is a neat product, and it tastes awesome – if someone gave me another one, I’d definitely eat it. I might even buy one if I saw it on a shelf. But I just don’t see myself buying them very often, nor recommending it as an energy bar replacement due to the lack of convenience.

  1. My spouse and I tried a PaleoKit. It was nasty. The beef jerky was tough and everything was covered in this nasty, sticky goo. We couldn’t even finish one between the two of us. If you like stuff like this just find bulk nuts & dried fruit, add your favorite beef jerky, and put it in ziplocs. It’ll taste better, cost less, and 1/10th the mess.

  2. @Mark

I love the fruit goo that holds it all together! But yeah, if you don’t like that, you’d be much better off doing your own trail mix bag.

  3. I just gobbled the entire package of beef jerky and it was good! To be honest I’ve never tried beef jerky before because I’ve been afraid and I’m glad I tried this one over a “SlimJim”. Anyway, I freaked out though about the sodium content but then again you’re right, that’s beef jerky for you. I’m just comforted with the fact that the ingredients are at least all natural. I do have agree with you though, it was messy :/ So like you, I agree, that this may be best eaten at a desk (which I’m glad I did). I bought the other pack Berries & Beef Jerky for my 3 year old, will wait to hear her or see her reaction to it later 🙂

  4. @Evangeline

Great, good to hear you avoided a SlimJim, I don’t know if those things even contain beef at all!

  5. You have to try the apple, mango, and coconut varities now.

  6. @Zachary

I bet the mango is so incredibly delicious!!
