ginsana energy

Ginsana Energy is a natural supplement that comes from ginseng, an adaptogen. It is designed to increase your energy level and improve endurance, without sugar or caffeine. I found Ginsana to be very potent and very effective, with minimal side effects.

How My Ginsana Energy Review Began

Most of the supplements I test fall into one of two categories:

  • Tried-and-true supplements I take often.
  • Brand new supplements that companies need guinea pigs for.

Today though, I’m writing about Ginsana Energy, which is a supplement my friend gave me because he had a box sitting around and never used it. Well, don’t mind if I do!

By the time I got around to testing these, it was March of 2014… and the box said “best by Feb 2014.” Oh well, close enough!

I had never heard of Ginsana and had no idea what to expect. The box made vague but reasonable claims, such as “Ginsana is designed to give you the natural energy support your body needs to keep up with life’s demands and accomplish more every day.”

Normally I’d look at that and say, “ha, that’s a fancy of way of saying it’s not going to do much of anything.” And in this case, I’d be very, very wrong!

But before we get to my test results, let’s figure out what this supplement actually is.

What Is Ginsana Energy?

As you may have guessed from the name, this is a ginseng supplement. Ginseng is the main ingredient, but there’s more:

Ginseng G2G® Extract (Standardized Panax Ginseng) 200 mg

Proprietary Energy Blend:
[(Schizandra (Schisandra chinensis) (berry), Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) (root), Decaffeinated Green Tea (Camellia sinensis) (leaf extract)] 200 mg

Panax Ginseng is fairly popular, as is green tea, but the other berry and root, not so much. A quick search showed me that they are just other plants which have been found to provide similar effects (they’re adaptogens, which can reduce the effects of stress on the body.)

What I find most interesting is that there is no caffeine in this at all! Most energy supplements manage to sneak caffeine in there somewhere. I actually thought Ginsana did, too, then I looked closer and realized the green tea had been decaffeinated!

So they are relying completely on the adaptogens. Fortunately, there is evidence that ginseng can reduce the perception of stress and fatigue in humans. It’s often recommended as a way to boost recovery.

And it will only cost about $10 for a 30-day supply!

Getting Energized with Ginsana Energy

Going into this test, I had no idea what to expect. So I swallowed a couple of these dark green gel capsules (or “VegCaps” they’re called) and waited…

[Note: The pills are much smaller than a fish oil capsule, as you can see in the picture.]

The box did say something about “continued usage,” so I figured it would take a week or so to notice anything, even if the supplement worked as intended.

Boy was I surprised when I felt fantastic on the very first day of testing! Despite a stressful morning doing taxes and sending emails, then having to drive into the city, exercising for three hours, going grocery shopping, and doing two loads of laundry at a laundromat, I wasn’t stressed or tired out. I handled everything in stride, feeling energized all day.

I even felt great at 10:40 PM filling out my testing log! It was similar to how I felt when taking the FRS Healthy Energy drink, but I was happier and more uplifted. It’s like no matter what I did, I always had slightly more energy than I needed. It was a super cool feeling.

“Hopefully this isn’t an effect that only happens the first day I use it!”

Day 2 was equally good! My favorite line from my testing notes was from this day at 1:30 PM, where I wrote: “You’d never know I didn’t have my coffee today!”

Another great day in the books, with no trouble falling asleep… I just didn’t want to go to sleep when I felt that good.

Day 3 was a long day, finally getting to bed at 11:30 PM, and not falling asleep till after 12:30. And then I woke up early the next day!

The early morning on Day 4 had me rethinking the idea of taking Ginsana every day! So, after three fun days, I skipped the Ginsana. Around 8:00 PM, I could certainly tell! I was not worn out, but I was not nearly as energetic as I was the past few days. Fortunately, as I hoped, this allowed me to get to sleep early!

Day 5 I went back on Ginsana, expecting a full day of training and to be out late. Then my plans changed, and I ended up having a sedentary day. Which meant I stayed awake even later than usual, being up till 1:00 AM because I had the energy.

So for days 6-7 (the weekend), I skipped the Ginsana. My energy levels wound down on day 6, and then on day 7, I felt like I needed an afternoon nap! So yeah, I could tell I hadn’t taken the Ginsana!

This whole time, I was keeping track of my sleep thanks to my handy Zeo device.

Most days where I took Ginsana, my ZQ score was in the high 70’s or low 80’s. The only exception being the one time I totally crashed and hit 98. But even when I took breaks from Ginsana, I still had plenty of days where I was only in the high 70’s. (For reference, I’m usually in the mid to upper 80’s when not taking any type of energy supplement.)

From this limited sample, it’s hard to say if Ginsana negatively affects my sleep. I feel that my lower ZQ scores have a lot to do with my daily activities and specific stressors more so than the Ginsana. Regardless, I have that gut feeling telling me to go easy on this stuff!

After the first couple weeks, I definitely slowed down. I actually decided to save the Ginsana for special occasions.

About a month later, I decided it was close enough to a special occasion. I had two pills and next thing I know, I’m amped up!! I put in a day of work, a super fast 30 minute trail run, and an hour of ice hockey, and still couldn’t get to sleep till almost 1:00 AM.

This stuff is potent, and it’s potent on the first day!

Coffee vs Ginsana

I’m a big fan of coffee, so I didn’t want to replace an enjoyable cup of coffee with some pills, but since the Ginsana was so strong, I cut way back on caffeine.

The trade off was the energy boost. With coffee, I get a big boost quickly, but then it wears off throughout the day, leaving me tired by late afternoon (at which point I can’t drink any more or I will never get to sleep!)

With Ginsana, I get a moderate but significant and enjoyable boost fairly quickly, and it lasts all day. That’s the much better way to feel, if you ask me!

My final verdict is…

Ginsana Energy is fairly inexpensive and gives me an AWESOME energy boost. I can only take it in moderation (or it will interfere with my sleep), but I’m extremely happy with it. I can’t guarantee it will work for you, but it’s worth a shot!
