While nothing beats a good cup of coffee in the morning, I’m always on the lookout for convenient energy boosters for throughout the day (and night.)

Something that might fit the bill are these chocolate energy bites called Energems.

They look like M&M’s, so at first, you think it’s just a novelty. Sort of like chocolate covered espresso beans, but more colorful. And you’re sort of right. I mean, they are neat little colorful candies.

But look closer at what’s in them…

You’ll find caffeine, taurine, B vitamins, and a couple other neat ingredients that deliver a potent energy boost!

Let’s look at that in greater detail…

Energems Health and Nutrition Info

First, the ingredients…

[Chocolate Flavor] Ingredients: Milk Chocolate (Sugar, Cocoa Butter, Chocolate Liquor, Whole Milk Powder, Lactose, Soy Lecithin, Salt, Vanillin (An Artificial Flavor), Sugar, Energy Blend, Gum Arabic, Artificial Coloring (Includes Red 40 Lake), Confectioner’s Glaze.

Well, that confirms that these are indeed chocolate candies with an “energy blend” added in. In other words, sugar coated in sugar, plus a dash of caffeine.

That’s 7 grams of sugar and 2 grams of fat per serving, adding up to 45 calories.

They don’t claim to be a health food, though, so I can’t complain.

Let’s focus on this proprietary energy blend…

In addition to the B vitamins, which are listed on their own, we know the blend consists of D-Glucuronolactone, taurine, caffeine, and L-Theanine.

Glucuronolactone and taurine are both popular ingredients in energy drinks and pre-workout supplements. It seems that they work well for some people and do nothing for others. I don’t feel as though either one is particularly important.

Caffeine on the other hand, everyone knows it works! Well, it works for most people. With 75mg caffeine per serving, that’s similar to a small cup of coffee.

Most intriguing, though, is the caffeine + theanine combo!! These compounds have a synergistic effect where, when combined, they put you in a state of high energy with strong mental focus. It’s very popular in the nootropics community.

I’ve been using this combination for years now, and for me, it’s incredible. It allows me to get totally jazzed up from caffeine without getting the jitters. So, it makes me productive!

Normally I’d get this through a green tea supplement, and health-wise, that is going to be the much better option. But now you can get it in candy if that’s your preference!

Testing The Energems Energy Boost

I opened up a box and was pleasantly surprised to find that these are far bigger than M&M’s! Each one is like a big, oddly-shaped disc, slightly bigger than a peanut M&M. Close to the size of a peppermint.

When a serving is only three pieces, the bigger, the better!

The first day of testing was a day where I didn’t want to get out of bed. I had hiked eight miles the day before, having nothing but a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, and I recovered with a slice of ice cream cake for dinner, and a poor night of sleep.

So while I was awake, I was not energetic. Then I had these (1 serving, 3 gems) at about 10:00am before going out for a quick jungle gym workout. In a minute or so, I was feeling the energy rush! Not overly crazy, but nice! My workout was only 6-8 minutes long, since my hands gave out first, but I felt great otherwise.

Then I thought, why not try more? Maybe I’ll get an insane boost?! So at noon, I had three more gems. Just one and I started to get a buzz!! Two servings and I never got jitters. Day one was a success!

That success continued the rest of the week. I had 1-2 servings per day, and I got the mental boost similar to drinking 1-2 small cups of coffee. I would almost get the jitters, but not quite.

I wasn’t particularly adventurous, though. The Energems themselves never left the house. I have to assume there’s risk of melting, so I wouldn’t plan to carry them around in my pocket on a warm day!

The Energems Taste Test

Here is where energy products usually let me down. Energems, well, they didn’t blow me away. And simply by not being awful, they taste a heck of a lot better than many similar products.

The candy shell is odd, but I think the chocolate part is decent. It’s not like the rich milk chocolate of an M&M. You’d never confuse the two products. I don’t know if it’s a lower quality chocolate, or less milk and sugar, or if it’s due to the additives.

And it finishes with some bitterness from the caffeine content.

Peanut Butter

Again, the candy shell isn’t appealing, and the chocolate is not M&M quality. If I didn’t know the flavor, I’d never be able to identify it as peanut butter.

There is maybe a hint of peanut butter, but I can only describe it as “slightly different than the plain chocolate flavor.”

And you get the bitterness at the end. I’d avoid this flavor.

These have a really pretty green shell! Letting it melt in my mouth, the shell has a pleasant flavor! Chewing up the chocolate, I’m hit with more minty goodness! It’s sort of like a York peppermint patty. And the flavor is potent enough that the bitter aftertaste is just barely there; well, at least when compared to how strong it is in the other two flavors.

Still not a delicacy, but if I was to buy an entire pack of one flavor, it would be Mint, hands down!

Compared to most energy shots, these are all pretty tasty. But compared to fine dark chocolate, or chocolate covered espresso beans, these are not good at all.

They’re good enough that someone like me would still eat an entire box (three servings) at once. But that’s my endurance athlete mentality taking over.

energems for road trips

My final verdict is…

These aren’t something I particularly enjoyed eating, but major props to Energems for crafting an energy blend that gives you a solid energy boost without the jitters you might get from straight up caffeine. If you go in knowing these won’t taste as good as real M&M’s, and you’re OK with the extra sugar and calories, I think you’ll be pleased.
