It seems like science and technology have brought us to a time where everything is expected to work so well, that we have to look for little reasons to choose one product over another. That’s why I’m reviewing this line of earth-friendly personal care products from Earth’s Care.

You can get personal care and beauty products just about anywhere, but how many brands use all-natural ingredients, don’t test on animals, and share your same values? Definitely more than there used to be, but still, not that many.

If you’re looking for products that contain no artificial colors or fragrances, parabens, or petrolatum, and conduct no animal testing, then these might be something to consider!

And we’re not talking about face masks or sugar scrubs or cleansing wipes. We’re talking about serious self-care products for athletes and outdoorsmen!

The Muscle & Joint Rub is made with camphor to help alleviate bruises, aches, and strains from your active lifestyle. And the Pain Relieving Ointment ups the camphor content and adds menthol and wintergreen oil to ease your aching muscles and joints after your tough workouts and big adventures.

And there’s an Anti-itch Cream that works on your skin to treat sunburn, bug bites, and poison ivy.

And finally, the Dry & Cracked Skin Balm will moisturize the skin on your hard-working hands.

They sent me a good selection to test!

Let’s see if their stuff works as well as (or better than) other brands. If it’s as good as Salonpas, for instance, I’d buy this instead. Because if I can soothe my sore muscles and help the environment at the same time, that’s what I’m gonna do!

Oh yeah, did I mention that Earth’s Care is a member of 1% For The Planet?

The planet needs us – now more than ever!

If you want to investigate all the ingredients, check out the Earth’s Care ingredients analysis at EWG.org. I’ll review these from a practical perspective.

Earth’s Care Muscle & Joint Rub

This is your basic rub for sore muscles. The active ingredient listed is camphor, which is common for this application. It also contains Arnica montana, although that’s listed as an inactive ingredient (which is very strange because Arnica montana is quite the popular pain reliever in homeopathic medicine).

Upon twisting open the jar, I’m greeted by a very natural looking cream – it’s a light beige color. In a world of perfectly clear, bright white, or surprisingly colorful creams and gels, this one has the most natural appearance.

As I went to apply it, it even felt natural. Unfortunately, that meant that it was a little bit dense and tough to spread around. And it didn’t seem to soak in as well as I’m accustomed to. Instead, it leaves a sticky, oily coating on the skin.

On the bright side, it’s sticky and oily in a natural way, if that makes sense!

It does offer some relief from mild muscle soreness. Perhaps your quads are feeling it after you did a few extra miles on the bike. Or your arms are shaky because you’ve been hitting the gym as part of your off-season training. This might help.

If I had really sore muscles though, or sore joints, this didn’t do much.

What it did was it made my elbow smell like fresh-baked cake donuts! I noticed it when driving to work one day. I could smell donuts, and with no sign of actual donuts anywhere, I realized that this cream (which was on my sore elbow, not far below my nose) smelled incredibly similar to cake donuts! No kidding! 🙂

I’m not sure if it’s just the cream warming up, or if it’s something specific to the scent of my skin, but it’s neat!

Earth’s Care Triple Action Pain Relieving Ointment

If you get really sore, this is what you want. “Triple action” means camphor, menthol, and wintergreen! It’s like the Muscle & Joint Rub on steroids!

Yeah, there is a seriously potent scent here. The menthol and wintergreen are going to open up your sinuses! Be prepared – people will smell you coming a mile away!

This one is also very natural looking – just a slightly darker yellow/beige color. And it’s just as hard to rub in.

With both these muscle rubs, they are more like a paste. They’re definitely not a cream nor a gel. Which means they don’t spread around very well and take a while to rub in. Worse, they don’t seem to soak in completely. They leave that sticky feeling on your skin. It’s not bothersome, but then you touch it with your hand and you’re like, “what the heck is this stuff?”

I’ll tell you what though – this one works! It provided me with quite a bit of relief from both sore muscles and sore joints. I even used it on one of my toes that always gets sore from being jammed up in my whitewater kayak!

At only $2 more than the Muscle & Joint Rub, I would definitely choose this!

Earth’s Care Anti-Itch Cream

Now here is something that was super effective! Their anti-itch cream looks like a typical cream or ointment – it’s just an ordinary white cream. You wouldn’t know it’s not Neosporin or Cortizone-10.

I applied this cream to a mosquito bite from a summer camping trip, and wow! It brought relief in less than 30 seconds! I was very impressed and very relieved because that bite was itchy!

On other occasions, it wasn’t so miraculous, but it always did help with itchy bug bites.

Earth’s Care Dry & Cracked Skin Balm

Whether you’re a rock climber that’s hard on your hands, or you’re subjecting your skin to cold, harsh conditions when riding or running, taking care of your hands is crucial. That’s what this skin balm is for.

Now, I’m as guilty as the next guy for neglecting his hands. But when this self-care coach reminded me to take care of my dry skin, I made this part of my nightly ritual, and it makes me feel like I’m treating my body right (which you have to do if you want to perform on race day!)

Because this cream is a similar consistency to the others, it’s probably best to use at night, right before bed. One day I put it on earlier and smudged my laptop because it leaves that slightly greasy layer on your skin!

I really like it, though. It definitely helps for temporary relief. It’s not super amazing to the point where it would make my dry skin go away completely (I don’t think anything would, given the dry winter air), but it’s good.

using earths care skin balm

You get used to the feel eventually.

After a while, I really didn’t mind the feeling of these balms. I got used to their quirks.

Then one day I went back to Salonpas pain relieving gel, and it felt nice on my muscles, but you know what? It left my hands really greasy and slimy!

I thought to myself, “oh, I guess maybe the Earth’s Care products were better all along!”

My final verdict is…

Aside from Topricin, which is really special and in a class of its own, and RockSauce, which has the best heat and sensation, Earth’s Care is pretty good.

I would certainly consider choosing Earth’s Care over Salonpas, Mineral Ice, or BenGay (or the typical products on the drugstore shelves) due to the natural ingredients and the company’s values. It seems to work as well as other topical pain relief products.

If you do go this route, I highly suggest choosing the Pain Relieving Ointment and paying the $2 more for it (compared to the Muscle & Joint Rub).
