clif bar mojo

I’m starting to think Clif Bar wants to dominate every shelf of the supermarket – they have regular energy bars, energy gels, gummy energy gels, sports drinks, protein bars, granola bars, snack bars, gummy fruit treats for kids, and who knows what else!

Today I’m reviewing what I would call a snack bar – the Clif Mojo Bar and its half-brother, the Clif Mojo Dipped Bar. (“Dipped” basically refers to the bar being dipped in a chocolate coating.)

The latest Mojo versions, Fruit & Nut and Dark Chocolate are included, too.

A departure from the standard Clif Bar, the Mojo bar looks like more of a snack bar than anything. I can’t really categorize it as an energy bar or a protein bar, so if you’re interested in this uncategorized bar, keep reading…

Health and Nutrition

Here are the ingredients:

[Chocolate Peanut] Ingredients: Organic Peanuts, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Coating (Organic Dried Cane Syrup, Organic Cocoa, Palm Kernel Oil, Organic Palm Kernel Oil, Organic Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla), Soy Rice Crisps (Soy Protein Isolate, Organic Rice Flour, Calcium Carbonate), Honey Roasted Peanuts (Peanuts, Dried Cane Syrup, Honey, Salt, Natural Vitamin E), Organic Pretzels (Organic Wheat Flour, Salt, Organic Canola Oil, Organic Malt), Organic Roasted Soybeans, Organic Peanut Butter, Organic Oat Syrup Solids, Vegetable Glycerin, Peanut Flour, Organic Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavor, Sea Salt, Organic Gum Arabic, Natural Vitamin E (Antioxidant).

Aside from being chock full of peanuts, all I notice is that there are a lot of ingredients here. While they’re not all bad, it’s too processed for my liking.

The other bars, specifically the Fruit & Nut line, are slightly different. Wild Blueberry Almond, for example, has an ingredients list only about half as long!

Calorie-wise, it’s a good size. But otherwise, I don’t see a whole lot of use for this bar, other than for a snack. It’s not high in carbs for energy, nor is it high in protein for recovery. It’s pretty high in fat, so it will digest slowly, which can be good in some cases (i.e snacking.)

The Fruit & Nut bars are slightly lower in calories, but also lower in protein.

So if it tastes good, it could work for a snack, but so far, I’m not seeing a need for this bar to be even a small part of my diet.

Clif Mojo Taste Test

This is not like a typical Clif bar at all! It is much more like a candy bar texture. Then the flavor is kind of like trail mix shaped into bar form.

Peanut Butter Pretzel

The bar looks like some pretzel chunks, peanuts, and peanut butter or butterscotch chips stuck together, all covered in caramel. So it resembles a PayDay candy bar, or peanut brittle even.

The taste is kind of bland compared to the Chocolate Peanut. The pretzel bits make it dry. It’s not specifically bad tasting, but not appealing to me.

[Dipped] Chocolate Peanut

This bar provides a good texture and flavor. It contains lots of peanuts with some caramel or something, then it’s all dipped in chocolate. So this one is kind of like a PayDay bar, but with some chocolate flavor. It’s sweet and salty.

You could call it a “trail mix bar” I guess. Overall, it’s a tasty snack!

Lastly, I should point out this was not very filling for a 210 calorie bar, despite the relatively high fat and protein content.

Now, to change pace a bit, are the five Fruit & Nut and Dark Chocolate flavors released in 2014:

clif mojo blueberry almond

Wild Blueberry Almond

Unlike average granolas with little dried out blueberries void of all flavor and nutrients, this bar is packed with quality blueberries that taste nearly as strong as fresh ones! And there are so many berries in each bar that every single bite is packed with flavor! You don’t taste much else, but the nuts give it a nice texture.

clif mojo cranberry almond

Cranberry Almond

The familiar taste of tart cranberries blends nicely with the almonds in this bar. This is one that I don’t love, but it’s tame enough that I could probably eat a bunch of them without getting sick of them. So it certainly serves a purpose. (Other bars, like the blueberry, are so strong they become too overpowering if you have more than one.)

clif mojo coconut almond peanut

Coconut Almond Peanut

This one blends robust almond flavor with the sweetness of coconut. It’s also pretty chewy thanks to the real coconut flakes. But just when you think you have it figured out, you bite down into a peanut for yet another prominent flavor! If you like your trail mix on the sweeter side, this is one for you!

clif mojo dark chocolate cherry almond

Dark Chocolate Cherry Almond

With not just a coating of dark chocolate on the bottom of the bar, but also big chunks of chocolate on top, this one should certainly please chocolate lovers! The chocolate is great and balances well with the sweet cherries. Imagine if you took a chocolate-covered cherry and stuffed it with almonds and granola – that’s what this bar tastes like!

clif mojo dark chocolate almond sea salt

Dark Chocolate Almond Sea Salt

I see this flavor more and more. Sometimes it’s just a chocolate bar with sea salt added. It doesn’t sound that appealing, but I’ll tell you what – I’m a fan! It’s simple, but that little bit of sea salt adds a little extra flavor that’s a very interesting contrast with the chocolate. It’s not revolutionary, but it’s hard not to like it.

All five of those were great! They made for excellent snacks. The only downside is that each one was sticky, so that takes away from the convenience factor.

My final verdict is…

I really love the ‘sweet & salty’ idea. Some flavors are awesome, like Dipped Chocolate Peanut. All the “____ Almond” ones were excellent, too. I could eat some more of those for sure!

So I know I’ll eat these again in the future, but I can’t see myself using this bar very often. It’s more of a snack rather than during-ride fuel, and for snacking, I’d rather have real food or a homemade energy bar (which would be less processed).

  1. The Mojo bar is no longer available, but if you liked these, consider the “Sweet & Salty” flavors available under the regular Clif Bar umbrella.
