b'more organic skyr smoothies

If you have no idea what “skyr” is, you’re not alone. I had never heard of it until I got word of these B’more Organic Skyr Smoothies, which might be the only skyr available in the United States!

Skyr is a cultured dairy product from Iceland, where they’ve been drinking it for over 1,000 years. Man, I wish I had discovered it earlier! (Thank you Andrew and Jennifer Buerger for bringing this drink to the USA!)

It closely resembles Greek yogurt, and can be made into smoothies. Like, oh, these skyr smoothies, which are delicious! Not to mention, healthy! They are high in protein, low in sugar, fat free, and contain probiotics to keep your gut healthy.

If you’ve had kefir, you have a pretty good idea of what these are going to be.

Let’s take a closer look at how nutritious these are…

B’more Organic Skyr Smoothies Nutrition Analysis

I know it’s going to be good, but let’s break it down. We’ll analyze the Strawberry flavor since it’s their newest one.

Ingredients: Pasteurized Organic Skimmed Milk, Organic Strawberry Puree, Organic Strawberry Flavor Extract, Organic Stevia Extract Powder, Live Active Yogurt Cultures (L. Bulgaricus, S. Thermphilus)

Looks like a great list to me!

The best part is, they get their skim milk from farms in Lancaster! Yes, right here in Pennsylvania! From grass-fed cows, no less.

Total Fat 0g
Total Carbs 9g

Sugars 7g
Protein 18g

There’s nothing to complain about here! It’s almost all protein!

The only thing to keep in mind is that while you’re getting two servings in a 16oz bottle, you’re likely to drink the entire bottle because it goes down so smooth! (You can re-seal it though if you want.)

Depending on the flavor, you’re going to get 30-46 grams of protein per bottle! The fruit smoothie flavors are lower in protein due to the fruit. The vanilla flavor, which contains more yogurt and less of anything added, is highest in protein.

Talk about an awesome on-the-go breakfast!

It’s healthy, natural, high in protein to keep you satiated, and convenient. Need your caffeine fix? The caffe latte flavor contains 160mg of caffeine from natural coffee extract.

Also, this would be a far better post-workout recovery drink than chocolate milk!

“Got Skyr?”

B’more Organic Skyr Smoothies Taste Test

There are five flavors right now. I tasted them all and here’s what I thought…

Banana

This one is very tart, like if you took plain Greek yogurt and mixed in some mashed up banana. It’s that same tart taste I recognize (and I like it.) The banana flavor seems to be both natural and imitation. It’s like there are two separate banana flavors – probably because it contains actual banana puree as well as banana flavor extract. Interestingly, this drink leaves an odd, bitey flavor on my tongue after each sip (almost like a banana Runts flavor.)

It’s a thick drink, but it’s so smooth and creamy. Probably not as thick as the kefir I remember drinking.

The banana is good, but not my favorite.

Mango Banana

This one is a bright yellow orange, just like a mango! And I can smell the mango in there! Oh yeahhh!

It sweeter than all the others, and not nearly as tart. You can taste both mango and banana. It’s just plain good.

This one is probably my favorite, although I wouldn’t want to drink it exclusively, since I would miss the tart, tangy experience of the others!

Strawberry

This one is very similar to the banana. You get that Greek yogurt tartness plus the taste of real strawberries. (As in, you cut up fresh strawberries and mix them into a bowl of Greek yogurt. Not like the strawberry syrup crap you might get with a single-serving cup of yogurt.)

It starts out with a mild strawberry flavor and finishes with that tart taste. The strawberry flavor is totally natural like the light red strawberries; it’s not even as sweet as eating the very ripe, dark red strawberries. You’d never guess it also contains a strawberry flavor extract. You don’t notice the stevia either.

It’s good if you really like strawberries, but I prefer a stronger strawberry flavor. This was the only one where I thought, “this could be better.”

Vanilla

I was expecting to like this one quite a bit, since I’m a big fan of the plain Trader Joe’s kefir, but the overall experience wasn’t very good. Some sips were a strong vanilla taste, while other sips were just like eating plain Greek yogurt. I guess it just didn’t blend well.

I’m not really sure what to compare it to (definitely not vanilla ice cream.) I’d drink this one again, but I wouldn’t buy it over the fruity flavors.

Caffe Latte

This reminds me of one of those Starbucks bottled iced latte drinks, but with yogurt instead of milk. You could think of it as sour coffee.

The flavor is alright, but after finishing it, I could not remember enjoying a single sip of it. I guess it’s just not my thing!

I actually prefer the vanilla to this!

Would it be a good breakfast? Or a post-workout recovery drink?

After testing, I can confirm that yes, this would indeed be a good breakfast or a good post-workout drink!

I felt great after drinking these!

Whether I had one for breakfast and felt full and energized, or had one after a workout and felt refreshed and ready to go, I simply felt good!

And let me assure you, if I drank 16oz of chocolate milk after my workout, I would not feel very good at all!

My final verdict is…

This is an absolutely delicious, healthy, protein-packed drink (with probiotics, too!) I could drink this every single day! Well, as long as I chose the fruit flavors!

I highly recommend consuming some sort of fermented or cultured dairy product containing live probiotics, and this fits the bill.
