Everyone knows the top of the muffin is the best part, right? At least, everyone that watched Seinfeld does…

The problem is, even if you’re only eating half a muffin, that’s still a lot of calories. And they’re still filled with artificial syrups and partially hydrogenated oils.

Well, back when I was picking up some frozen pizza, a box of Vitalicious VitaTops on the next shelf piqued my curiosity. These are essentially diet muffin tops.

You keep the VitaTops in the freezer until you’re ready to eat one, then you pop it in the microwave for 15 seconds. It’s the same concept as a box of frozen waffles. The difference is that these are somehow healthier than your standard frozen treats…

Vitalicious VitaTops Health and Nutrition Info

To me, there’s a HUGE difference between a healthy food and a low-calorie food. If you’re going to succeed at your fitness goals, you need more than a low-calorie diet – you need a healthy diet!

And that’s why I think these VitaTops are terrible. They are mostly wheat flour and sugar with some added vitamins. I prefer natural foods that already contain vitamins and minerals without human intervention.

Yes, they’re only 100 calories each. And yes, you do get 9g fiber in one of these small snacks. That’s quite a bit – the same as you’d get in 1/2 cup of black beans. But if you choose the diet muffin top, you’re also ingesting 11g sugar! I don’t think it’s a worthwhile tradeoff. Especially because the VitaTop was not satisfying whatsoever. I’m pretty sure I was more satiated beforehand; eating a VitaTop just made me crave more VitaTops!

If just one is not satisfying, what’s the point of going low calorie?

vitatop healthy as an apple

What got me really annoyed was where the package claimed “more vitamins and less sugar than an apple!” Really?! You’re comparing your dessert to an apple??!! Seriously, anyone that thinks that is a meaningful claim needs to set up an appointment with a Registered Dietician right away!

I’ve probably said it a million times – if you’re going on a diet, just eat healthy food. Don’t eat “less-unhealthy” foods that attempt to provide the taste of junk food with the health benefits of a salad.

Frankly, I don’t care if these are only 1 Weight Watchers point! Vitalicious and I just aren’t compatible.

My VitaTop Taste Test

Hopefully these at least taste good, right?

The good news is, you don’t need to be a chef or even know how to bake brownies. If you can operate a microwave, you can have a warm dessert ready to go in no time.

I tried one flavor… Deep Chocolate.

This does actually taste pretty good. And the chocolate flavor is strong! To top things off (literally,) the melted chocolate chips on top were scrumptious!

It’s pretty good for being diet food. I’d rate these similarly to the breakfast pastries from Nutrisystem – tasty, but nothing special.

These were actually so sweet that I began to feel sick after two in a row. (One wasn’t enough, but two did me in!)

Just make sure you get the cooking time just right. I did one that didn’t get warm on the inside and another that developed a tough consistency like it was overcooked. (Yep, I failed at microwave food!)

I bet I’d prefer the pumpkin spice or banana nut flavor. I don’t see myself buying any more, though. They’re not cheap! At $4.29 for a 4-pack, they’re expensive little snacks (unless you’re used to fresh-baked muffins, which are probably around $4 each at the coffee shop).

My final verdict is…

Why am I always tempted to try out these diet foods? I don’t know why. Nor can I think of a reason I’d ever recommend these. Even VitaPizza, though not my favorite food by any means, is better, healthier, and cheaper than these VitaTops.

If you do want a brownie, just have one. This VitaTop isn’t much better for you.
