honey stinger protein chews

What if you could get your protein supplement in a yummy, gummy chewable form?

That’s exactly what you get with the Honey Stinger Protein Chews. It’s a neat idea. They are a gummy energy chew with added protein.

I never thought protein could be combined with a gummy substance and still taste acceptable. So let’s see if these are any good!

Ingredients and Nutrition Facts

Let’s look at the label of the Raspberry flavor. Here are the ingredients:

Ingredients: Organic Sugar, Organic Honey, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Algal Protein, Organic Pea Protein, Monocalcium Phosphate, Pectin, Citric Acid, Color Added (Organic Black Carrot Juice Concentrate), Natural Flavors, Ascorbic Acid, Potassium Citrate.

First, that’s a lot of sugar! But really, what energy chew isn’t based on sugar?

So we’ll move on to the protein. Organic pea protein is good stuff, in my experience. It doesn’t have as bad of gritty, sandy texture as rice protein does.

But… what is algal protein? Is it algae? Can you buy a tub of algae protein powder?

I had to do some research!

An article from the NPR Science Desk says that algae is used in a whole food form, so rather than pure protein, you’re also getting vitamins and minerals. Chlorella is the microalgae of choice, so it sounds like algal protein is synonymous with chlorella powder.

I have a bag of spirulina powder in my fridge (I prefer the flavor of spirulina over chlorella), so that might mean I already have algal protein on hand!

It sounds wonderful, until you continue researching and discover that algal protein became popular in 2016 due to reports of it making people violently ill!

Well, that’s not good! There are plenty of food allergies out there though (eggs, peanuts, wheat, etc.) – so just add algae to the list.

Moving on the Nutrition Facts (per pouch).

Calories 150
Total Fat 0.5g
Sodium 50mg
Potassium 25mg
Total Carbs 32g
Sugars 27g
Protein 5g

As I mentioned earlier, 27 grams is a heck of a lot of sugar. This is like a regular sugary supplement, with a little protein added.

It would probably be best during your workout, as opposed to a post-workout protein supplement. Think of it like Accelerade.

Honey Stinger Protein Chews Taste Test

Right off the bat, these are delicious! They are a lot more ‘gummy’ than I expected!

Sure, you can tell there is something different (the addition of protein powder), but these are good gummy/chewy candy. They are not chalky nor powdery nor crunchy or anything like that.

honey stinger protein chews raspberry flavor

A typical raspberry flavor; just the right potency. It has that mix of sweet and a little bit tart. The flavor is more potent as an aftertaste.

It’s pretty good, but not outstanding. I could eat a whole bag and be happy; at the same time, I could never have one again and be just as happy. I don’t plan to buy any more of these.

honey stinger protein chews juneberry

Who knows what a juneberry is?! Not me!

You can tell it’s a berry flavor, but it’s a bit odd. It’s more understated, less sweet than the raspberry. It’s actually closer to blueberry, maybe a very mild blackberry – so I say “understated blueberry” is the best description.

I like it A LOT more than I like the raspberry flavor actually. But I tend to like odd flavors. 🙂

This one could stand the test of time (because while I don’t love it, it’s something that’s bland enough, I shouldn’t get sick of it).

honey stinger protein chews

Cherry Lime

This one is absolutely delicious! The flavor is powerful as soon as it touches your tongue. I can taste both the cherry and the lime.

Now, I do still prefer a good cherry limeade drink over these. With these, you get that wonderful flavor… but it’s followed by the slightly grainy texture.

This seemed like it would be my favorite, but I’m starting to think that Juneberry would stand the test of time better. Only time will tell.

The texture isn’t half bad.

I’m impressed because these are mostly like gummies/chews. You can tell there is protein in there, but it’s faint.

Aside from that point, these are hard to describe. They’re not soft like a gummy bear. They’re more like Sour Patch Kids.

They are unique.

Alert: Honey Stinger Protein Chews Removed from the Marketplace

One day, when looking to research these chews, I found this statement:

After extensive testing by our own independent laboratories, testing performed by our manufacturer, and their independent laboratories we have been unable to identify any pathogen or undeclared allergen in any Honey Stinger Protein Chews to date. The health and satisfaction of our consumers remains the most important thing we have. In an abundance of caution, we want to take every measure we can to preserve our customers’ health, trust, and loyalty. With this in mind, we have decided to remove the Protein Chews from the marketplace. Please visit our website to report an issue so we can address each individual’s experience while we continue our testing and investigation. http://www.honeystinger.com/foodsafety

Apparently, the Honey Stinger Protein Chews were causing similar issues to Soylent (who blamed the algal protein ingredient). So maybe there is something related to a chlorella allergy?

I wouldn’t know, because I have previously taken both spirulina and chlorella supplements (e.g. Energy Bits) without issue.

The packs of protein chews I consumed during this review did fall into the ranges listed here, so they were indeed subject to this recall.

My final verdict is…

This product has been discontinued and taken off the market. But I thought they were pretty good!

I guess you’ll have to try other delicious Honey Stinger products!
