cow wow cereal milk cartons

When I was a kid (and even up through high school), I’m pretty sure I had cereal for at least two meals each day. I was actually a huge fan of Honey Bunches of Oats, Raisin Bran, and other ordinary cereals, choosing them over the sugary, colorful cereals almost every time.

But there was always something special about drinking the milk after a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch! The “leftover” cereal milk was second to none!

The problem is, now that I know better than to eat box after box of processed cereal, I’m always missing that experience.

Well, it’s no problem anymore, thanks to Cow Wow Cereal Milk, the perfect replacement for those coveted bowls of milk – assuming you subscribe to the “chocolate milk is nature’s recovery drink” idea.

Personally, I don’t even want to look at milk after a tough run or ride on a hot day. But after some weight lifting in the basement or pickup ice hockey, I’ll gladly chug some flavored milk for a pick me up!

Let’s see if this Cow Wow stuff really “wows” me…

Cow Wow Health and Nutrition Info

Well, it’s milk.

INGREDIENTS: Organic 1% Milk, Organic Cane Sugar, Natural Flavors.

OK, it’s milk… plus extra sugar.

I do like that they base this on organic milk. If you drink dairy milk, I suggest going organic (though local milk would be even better).

Milk plus extra sugar is far from what I consider a healthy snack, but if you look at it as a recovery drink, the extra sugar is a welcome addition!

Nutrition Facts

Per 8oz serving / 8.5oz container:

Calories 170
Total Fat 2.5g
Sodium 170mg
Potassium 390mg
Total Carbs 20g
Sugars 20g
Protein 12g

You’re getting quite a few carbs, a good amount of protein, and just a little fat. That’s not bad.

Let’s see how it stacks up to a special recovery drink…

CowWow vs Hammer Recoverite

What do you get for your $1.99 in this flavored milk drink compared to a specialty recovery drink?

Let’s look at Hammer Recoverite since that’s the most recent one I’ve had. Recoverite provides the same 170 calories per serving, but you get more carbs, less protein, and less fat (no fat at all actually). That comes out to 33g carbs instead of 20g, and 10g protein instead of 12g. Recoverite also includes extra amino acids such as L-Glutamine.

Perhaps most importantly, Hammer’s formula uses whey protein isolate, which is essentially lactose-free. That’s a big selling point for some people!

The big drawback is, it’s $3.50 for a single-serving packet! The only way to get it for under $1.99 per serving is to buy the giant 32-serving tub for $56.95.

I never thought $1.99 for a single-serving carton of milk would seem like a good deal, but in this case, it’s the cheaper product!

Which one is best?

For a high-level endurance athlete, undertaking tough workouts on a daily basis, the Recoverite is the way to go. If you’re doing resistance training or not exercising more than an hour per day, the milk is going to be just fine.

The CowWow milk actually looks closer to a recovery drink formula than Muscle Milk does!

CowWow Taste Test

I had a chance to sample three of the four flavors. (Unfortunately the peanut butter flavor isn’t ready yet.)

Fruity Trudy – This milk offers some fruit flavor, but it’s not plain strawberry. It’s an artificial fruit punch type of flavor, which I’d guess is sort of like Fruity Pebbles cereal. It’s pretty interesting, and I’d drink it again, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.

Chocolate Chip Cathy – This one tastes a lot like chocolate Ovaltine, which I always liked, but this flavor is a tad off. I assume they’re going for the Cookie Crisp cereal milk flavor, but I can’t remember what that tasted like. To go along with the not very good flavor, I encountered a bad aftertaste, so this one is not recommended.

Cinny Minny – This is the one I was truly interested in for two reasons: 1, I like anything cinnamon. 2, I wondered if it would really taste like Cinnamon Toast Crunch milk, which has a distinct flavor. You can’t just dump cinnamon sugar in milk and recreate it.

Well… yes!!! The milk is excellent and it is indeed the exact flavor I was looking for!! As soon as it hit my taste buds, I knew it! If you like cinnamon, you’ll love this stuff!

Overall I thought the chocolate was terrible, the fruit was pretty good, and the cinnamon, outstanding!

My final verdict is…

Since I could very well be teetering on the edge of lactose intolerance, I’m not about to go back to drinking dairy milk just for the sake of Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavored milk. And I’m not sold on chocolate milk being the ideal recovery drink for everyone, anyway.

However, if you have found chocolate milk to be a good recovery drink for you, and you miss the flavors of leftover bowls of cereal milk, you could really enjoy this stuff!
