Apparently I’m not the only one to like when energy bars and gels are made into convenient little bites, because now you can get every type of food in bite-size form – even protein bars!

Enter the Clif Shot Roks, mini protein bar bites that pack all the nutrition of a protein bar into fun and easy to eat pieces.

These bites are really cool and even challenge the Clif Shot Bloks for “most fun to eat” honors! Keep reading for all my thoughts…

Clif Shot Roks Health & Nutrition

Let’s review the ingredients…

INGREDIENTS: Clif Protein Blend TM (Whey Protein Concentrate, Milk Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate), Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Crystals, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavors), Glycerine, Inulin Syrup (Chicory Root Extract), Almond Butter, Natural Flavors, Organic Tapioca Maltodextrin, Organic Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Confectioners Glaze, Salt, Organic Corn Starch, Colored with Caramel Color and Beta Carotene, Soy Lecithin, Carnauba Wax.

I figured this would be a Clif Builder’s Bar in different form, but I was wrong. While the Builder’s Bar is based on soy protein and brown rice syrup (like many other Clif products,) these Shot Roks are based on whey protein and cane juice.

Call me a traditionalist, but I just prefer to stick with whey protein and cane sugar, as opposed to soy protein, rice protein, brown rice syrup, agave nectar, etc. So… the Clif Shot Roks would be my personal favorite protein source in the Clif lineup.

Aside from that, the lesser ingredients are basically what you’d expect in a Clif Bar.

And the Nutrition Facts:

Serving size: 1 bag (10 pieces)
Calories 270
Fat 4.5g
Carbs 38g
Sugar 28g
Protein 20g

Looks like the Clif Roks provide a good amount of protein and overall calories. They offer plenty of carbs, too, and a little less fat than the Clif Builder’s Bar. Overall they look great for post-ride recovery, but the formula would also work well during rides.

Clif Shot Roks Taste Test

The Roks are available in Peanut Butter, Chocolate, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavors. Here are my thoughts…

Chocolate

These look like malted milk balls, and at first, they taste like malted milk balls thanks to the hard coating (which provides a nice crunch, by the way.) But soon enough I noticed the texture is different. Then the taste and texture combined to remind me of something… a tootsie roll!

It was funny, but it really was kind of like a tootsie roll once you started chewing it. I’m not a huge chocolate fan, but I guess I like tootsie rolls, because I like these.

Clif’s site says they’re like brownie batter balls. I guess it’s kind of like that, too. But I think of it more like a Tootsie Pop with a much thinner crunchy coating.

Clif Shot Roks In Use

What I first noticed is that these don’t melt in your hand! They look like they will, but then you feel the coating and it just doesn’t feel like something that will melt.

But what if it’s 95 degrees and they’re out in the sun in your jersey pocket? I’m not sure. I have only tested these in moderate conditions so far.

But if they can withstand high temperatures, they will be awesome, because they would work for during-ride fueling and post-ride recovery.

For during-ride use, I’d use something like Clif Shot Bloks for my main fuel source, but pop a few of these Shot Roks to get a jump start on my recovery without loading me down or slowing digestion.

My final verdict is…

I think the Clif Shot Roks are great for during-ride and/or post-ride recovery. I really like the texture and flavor, the ingredients are nice, and they’re more fun to eat than a protein bar. Definitely try these if you want a delicious and convenient protein source!
