cascadian farm granola bars

If you like Nature Valley crunchy granola bars but want something organic, consider switching to Cascadian Farm Organic Crunchy Granola Bars. They’re just like a typical crunchy granola bar, except they’re organic.

Of course, with that word on the box comes a higher price tag for less food (they come in 5-count boxes instead of the typical 6-count.)

Why did I buy them then? For one, they were on sale. But more importantly, they came in an almond butter flavor! You don’t see that very often! I’ll describe the flavor once we get past the prerequisite nutrition information…

Ingredients and Nutrition Information

We’ll start with the ingredients list…

Ingredients: Rolled Oats, Sugar, Sunflower Oil, Almond Butter, Tapioca Syrup, Oat Fiber, Rice Flour, Inulin, Sea Salt, Soy Lecithin, Baking Soda, Natural Flavor, Salt.

That looks standard for a granola bar, with the cool part being that pretty much all the ingredients are organic (the exceptions are salt and baking soda.)

Note: Clif’s crunchy granola bars use some organic ingredients too, so also consider them.

They contain a decent amount of fat, but are high in carbs and low in protein – in other words, a normal granola bar. I won’t be making these a big part of my diet, but they look fairly healthy for an occasional snack.

The Taste Test

I only tried one flavor, and that was Almond Butter.

And they were delicious! Let me put it this way – I’d choose a jar of peanut butter over almond butter any day, but these bars are a different story! They have a more potent flavor than almond butter, packing a nutty flavor punch that’s strong, tasty, and unique!

I’m not sure exactly how to describe the flavor. It’s certainly not peanut butter. There is some almond flavor, but there’s also some robust spiciness in there. That must be from the “natural flavor” because neither rolled oats nor almond butter normally taste like this.

The texture was excellent as well, featuring a great crunchiness. You’d think there’s more than rolled oats in there.

Overall, they’re so awesome! I like the almond butter drizzled on top, too.

If you don’t like the crunch, just break them up into bits and mix with yogurt. Let that sit in a bowl in the fridge overnight, and you’ll have an excellent breakfast awaiting you the next morning.

Now, the bad news…

I don’t see the almond butter flavor listed anymore! Apparently it was replaced by a peanut butter flavor! That’s very unfortunate because it’s nice to have an alternative flavor. I mean, everyone makes a peanut butter granola bar!

After doing some digging, I found out these bars are from Small Planet Foods, the same company that owns Larabar. I love Larabars, but they do have this awful habit of discontinuing some of my favorite flavors! So I’m not surprised.

I’ve already checked Amazon.com and there are no sellers with any inventory left. 🙁

My final verdict is…

If you want an organic granola bar for an occasional snack, I definitely recommend Cascadian Farm. I’ve had their chewy granola bars as well and they’re also very good. You’ll have to settle for standard flavors like chocolate chip and peanut butter, though.
