Tested: Archer Farms Trail Mix

If you’ve never been to a Target store, you have probably been missing out on food from Archer Farms (a Target house brand.) Archer Farms is a line of food products that includes such items as energy drinks and trail mix.

Not just any trail mix though – this is more of a premium trail mix, composed of higher-end ingredients than the typical raisin and peanut combo.

I got two 13oz bags on sale for $2.50 each (regularly $2.99.) That is an amazing deal considering this stuff is on par with Bear Naked Trail Mix which retails for about $3.00 per 5oz bag!

Yep, Archer Farms trail mix is like 60% cheaper than Bear Naked!

Trail Mix Taste Test

Here is what I thought of the two flavors of Archer Farms trail mix:

Fruit & Berry

This is “Fruit & Berry trail mix” with cranberries, dark & golden raisins, pineapple, papaya, cherries & blueberries.

This mix was pretty good and I absolutely loved the cherries. They were strong and sweet.

It was a little light on the pineapple and papaya, unfortunately, and the pieces that were there were way too small. Luckily the raisins were good, because there were a lot of them!

But who wants an expensive bag of raisins?

Raisin Nut

This “Raisin Nut trail mix” was filled with golden raisins, dark raisins, pepitas, cranberries, almonds, cashews, filberts & pistachios.

Again, there were tons of good raisins, but this time there was a better variety. The cashews were great and I thought the pepitas were awesome! (The pepitas were like some sort of green pumpkin seeds, and tasted somewhat like sunflower seeds, but they were unique.)

I liked this one more than Fruit & Berry since it had more of the good ingredients, and contained fewer dried cranberries, which I just don’t care for in trail mix.

Nutrition Facts

Here are the nutrition facts for Raisin Nut:

Serving size 3 Tbsp
Calories 130
Fat 5g
Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 0mg
Total Carbohydrate 17g
Fiber 2g
Sugars 12g
Protein 3g

Overall, the trail mix scores pretty good on the health scale. It contains all natural, whole ingredients, and there is no sodium.

The only downside is that trail mix is so easy to eat. I can easily eat half a bag of this stuff and then feel too lethargic to make it out onto the trail!

My final verdict is…

If you don’t need trail mix, you don’t really need to add this to your diet. (Being so calorie dense and easy to eat, you might overindulge like I did.)

But if you need trail mix (for a big hike or for a long ride,) this stuff is pretty good. It’s a lot cheaper than the Bear Naked trail mixes and nearly as good, so it’s worth trying.

Tested: Bear Naked Trail Mix

bear naked hundred mile medley bag

Some people never quit – along with their new line of Native granolas, Bear Naked has some new flavors of trail mix to try.

This means we’ll have a few granola chunks mixed with dried fruit, nuts, and other “trail mix style” ingredients, but with the scrumptious, healthy formula that Bear Naked does so well.

(No hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, no high fructose corn syrup, etc.)

The flavor I tried is called “hundred mile medley” which looks like a standard trail mix.

The main ingredients I see are:

Cashews, almonds, dark chocolate chips, cherries, granola chunks, sunflower seeds.

Once opened, I finished the bag in no time. All the ingredients are good, and overall it makes for a tasty trail mix.

I liked how the cashews and almonds are plain/raw, instead of being covered in oil and salt like you might be used to. My favorite part had to be the dried cherries, though, since they were an awesome blend of dried fruit texture and sweet cherry juiciness.

The other flavors of Bear Naked trail mix are High Sierra Blend, Pacific Crest Mix, Appalachian Trail Mix, and Continental Divide Blend.

I want to try the Pacific Crest and High Sierra flavors sometime, because they seem to have somewhat more uncommon ingredients, such as dried apples and pistachios.

My final verdict is…

You can look at the mix and tell everything is high quality, but there’s not a lot that separates this from other brands’ trail mixes. This trail mix simply didn’t “wow” me like the Bear Naked products usually do.

It’s just a good mix of food that you’ll probably enjoy.
