WIN detergent

Last week’s Road Bike Rider newsletter had a question about getting odors out of synthetic cycling clothes. It didn’t surprise me, I mean, not only have I heard a lot of people complain about that, I know from experience! Synthetic clothes just seem to retain that “eau de cycling” scent.

I’ve heard that wool garments will stay fresh, but it isn’t really feasible to switch your entire wardrobe to wool clothing. (Not that it’s a bad idea.)

On the Chopping Block: Clif Bloks

After reading a review of Click Bloks at active.com, I’m anxious to try them.

While basically an alternative to gel, they offer something different to chew on. They’re like gummy bears in a way.

Not exactly like the FRS health chews, but similar, because both are like candy!

And a 2 serving bag is $2, right on par with gels. The active.com review made them sound real tasty. Let’s see…

Gardening for Exercise and Stress Relief

When I found this article, I just had to laugh. Not that gardening isn’t exercise, it’s just that my mom has a nursery and huge gardens, so I’ve been stuck doing this since I was a toddler. Although it can be relaxing, it causes plenty of stress for me because I’m always forced to do it!

But it is a good workout and can be fun, so check it out. And if you like it, start volunteering to build trails for mountain bikers – that’s a workout!

The Sun is Shining!

It’s customary that everyone talks about the importance of sunscreen at this time of year. It’s a great way to save time by just republishing the same article from last May ;)

So of course, active.com has their story online. And yes, it’s the same info I’ve heard for years: wear sunscreen, reapply often, avoid the sun at peak times, eat your broccoli, you don’t want to get skin cancer, etc.

The thing is, all these articles are written by the same doctors that do nothing but prescribe drugs. So I’ll stick with my plan of getting some healthy sun instead of covering my body in chemicals, thank you very much.

I think this will turn into a full size article for the website. Stay tuned for that!

Update: For some new sunscreen info, take a look at Sunscreen: Friend or Foe? and my review of Aubrey Organics sunscreen.

Smart Cycling

Written by Arnie Baker in 1997, this book is kind of simple and outdated, but it’s not bad for being almost a decade old. Smart Cycling has a few good nuggets of info that are well worth the price of the book (a mere $9.75 at Amazon right now.) I bought the book at the end of last year while I was writing a report about motivation in cycling, and it didn’t disappoint.

The long section of sample indoor trainer workouts is easily worth the cost of the book. If you spend a lot of time on the trainer in the winter, this will provide some much needed variety.

I’ll try to write a complete book review in the future.
